Abuja, Nigeria – The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) has strongly condemned the alarming and dangerous practice of using cement to preserve beans, describing it as a grave threat to public health and a criminal act against Nigerian consumers.
NANTS has received credible reports and field observations indicating that some unscrupulous traders are deliberately applying cement powder to beans in an attempt to extend shelf life and deter insects. This practice is highly toxic, unsafe, and unacceptable. Cement contains harmful chemicals that are not fit for human consumption. When ingested, even in small quantities, it can lead to serious health complications, including stomach damage, poisoning, and long-term organ failure.
“The use of cement to preserve beans is wicked, dangerous, and must stop immediately. This is not preservation; it is poisoning,” NANTS stated.
PUBLIC HEALTH WARNING
NANTS hereby warns the general public to exercise extreme caution when purchasing and preparing beans. Consumers are advised to: Thoroughly wash and rinse beans multiple times before cooking Inspect beans carefully for unusual powdery residues Report suspicious products to relevant authorities
CALL FOR ENFORCEMENT
The Association calls on: The Federal Ministry of Health NAFDAC Consumer protection agencies Market regulatory authorities to immediately investigate this practice, identify those responsible, and prosecute offenders to the full extent of the law.
COMMITMENT TO EXPOSURE
NANTS assures Nigerians that it will continue to expose individuals and networks involved in this dangerous practice, regardless of their influence or location.
“We will not be silent while Nigerians are being slowly poisoned in the name of profit. We will continue to expose them.” The Association reiterates its commitment to safe trade practices, consumer protection, and food safety across Nigerian markets.
