The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) has taken a significant step in empowering Community-Based Aggregators (CBAs) by providing specialized training on post-harvest handling techniques. This training is aimed at equipping newly onboarded CBAs with the knowledge and skills needed to ensure that farm produce maintains its quality from the field to the market, ultimately reducing post-harvest losses and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
One of the core areas of focus during the training was grain quality standards. CBAs were educated on the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the supply chain, from proper harvesting methods to effective storage and transportation. By adhering to these standards, farmers can command better prices for their produce, ensuring that they remain competitive in the market.
Beyond the basic handling of grains, NANTS also emphasized the importance of adding value to farm produce. Participants were introduced to various methods of processing, packaging, and branding, which can significantly enhance the marketability of their products. By investing in these value-added processes, farmers and aggregators can reach new markets, increase their profitability, and elevate the overall quality of goods available in local and international markets.
An important aspect of the training was the introduction of digital tools and platforms to market farm produce. Participants learned how to leverage online platforms to showcase and sell their goods, enabling them to reach buyers beyond their immediate communities. This digital shift opens up new opportunities for farmers to access larger markets, including urban centers and even international buyers, boosting rural economies.
The hands-on aspect of the training included practical sessions on using the Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bag, an innovative technology designed to preserve grains and other crops by limiting moisture and pest damage. Participants had the opportunity to practice using these bags, giving them a real-world understanding of how to effectively store produce for longer periods, while maintaining its quality.
NANTS aims to achieve a sustainable agricultural value chain through such training programs, equipping CBAs with the tools and knowledge they need to drive positive change in their communities. The adoption of these techniques and technologies is expected to significantly improve post-harvest handling practices across farming communities, reducing waste, improving quality, and enhancing farmers’ income.
